Virginia Doctor Tries Truck-Stop Medicine to Keep Family Practice Alive
Jan 19, 2015 -- Describes an innovative way of providing healthcare to truck drivers who often find no other time to receive the care they need. This doctor provides care at a rural truck stop in Virginia and, using health information technology, can send along any test results for healthcare recommendations to the driver's next stop. It's a unique approach to healthcare provision that is treating a hard to access population while bringing financial security to his small, rural practice.

Housing Assistance Council Releases New Report on Housing for Rural Seniors
The Housing Assistance Council has recently released a new publication that examines the housing needs of a growing senior population in rural America. The publication, “Housing an Aging Rural America: Rural Seniors and their Homes” explores the challenges and opportunities in providing affordable and quality housing for the country’s rapidly growing senior rural population, which consisted of over 25% of the U.S.’s senior population in 2010. According to the report, “In far too many rural communities, the only housing options for seniors are their own homes or nursing homes. With the scope and magnitude of the looming demographic shift of seniors, rural communities will need to develop a range of housing options such as rental housing, rehabilitation and repair programs, housing with services, and assisted living. These options not only enhance the lives of seniors but are fiscally prudent measures that are more cost effective than long-term care options.” Click here to read the report and here to watch a recording of a recent webinar covering highlights from the report.

Nebraska has had little activity in building local and regional food systems. The state is large and rural towns are often times located at a good distance between them. This webinar will look at what we learned about the opportunities and challenges of production of local and regional foods in Nebraska, how this project resulted in our ability to bring these issues to state legislators, and the impact this project has had on Nebraska to date.
Speakers:
Dr. Charles Francis, has his B.S. in Agronomy from the University of California at Davis; his M.S. in plant breeding and Ph.D. in plant breeding from Cornell University. His interests lie in design of resource efficient cropping systems, long-term rotations and cover crops, spatially diverse field designs, integrated crop/animal systems, whole farm planning and watershed design for environmentally sound production systems; on-farm and participatory research and educational activities, collaborative research design; future farming systems, role of diversity and integrated resource management, value added enterprises and products, and relationships of small and moderate-scale family farms to viable rural communities.
Jon Bailey, J.D. directs the Rural Policy Program at the Center for Rural Affairs in Lyons, Nebraska. Jon is a 1980 graduate of Creighton University with a B.A. in Political Science and a 1983 graduate of the Creighton University School of Law. In 1996 he received a Master’s in Public Policy from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. He was awarded a 1996 Presidential Management Intern award and served as a Special Assistant to the Associate Commissioner for Policy at the Social Security Administration in Washington, DC. In 1997, he became a Legislative Fellow for United States Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota. Jon came to the Center for Rural Affairs in 1998. He has authored over 50 research briefs for the CRA that look at issues facing rural America.
Kathie Starkweather, Director Farm and Community Program, Center for Rural Affairs, has her undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of Nebraska. She worked as a rural sociologist for USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service prior to coming to work at the Center for Rural Affairs as part of the policy program. She has led an effort in Nebraska around building local and regional food systems including work on Farm to School and has helped some of the state’s most vulnerable populations get access to healthy local food. Her program works with beginning farmers to help them develop successful and sustainable farms and ranches.

NEWS: Delta Regional Authority launches Delta Challenge pitch competitions to identify and strengthen entrepreneurs in Delta
Entrepreneurship Network will cultivate innovation, growth in regional entrepreneurial community
CLARKSDALE, Miss. – The Delta Regional Authority has launched The Delta Challenge—a series of entrepreneurship pitch competitions—as part of a newly established program called the DRA Entrepreneurship Network to boost entrepreneurial success in the Delta region and Alabama Black Belt—DRA Federal Co-Chairman Chris Masingill announced today.
The Entrepreneurship Network builds on a key partnership with The Idea Village to identify, connect, nurture and grow entrepreneurs from across the Delta region and Alabama Black Belt by addressing regional deficiencies in capital, training, and best practices through a connected infrastructure of support organizations, investors, and educators.
The new program seeks to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the Delta region and broaden the region’s cultural understanding of entrepreneurship. The Delta Challenge pitch competitions will help regional leadership to identify up to 16 Entrepreneurship Network fellows and will take place in five communities across the region:
- Cape Girardeau, Missouri – February 24, 2015
- Ruston, Louisiana – February 26, 2015
- Jackson, Mississippi – February 27, 2015
- Jonesboro, Arkansas – February 28, 2015
- Linden, Alabama – March 2, 2015
As a part of the Network’s development, DRA is also accepting applications from individuals and non-profit organizations that provide direct entrepreneurship support or educational services. Representatives from up to 16 support organizations will be identified to join the Network. Application guidelines and instructions for interested entrepreneurs and support organizations can be found at dra.gov/entrepreneur.
The winners of the Delta Challenge competitions and those entrepreneurship support organizations selected will be designated as Entrepreneurship Network Fellows.
The fellowship will include participation in a special segment of New Orleans Entrepreneur Week (NOEW), produced by The Idea Village, on March 20-27, 2015. Network Fellows will showcase their ideas to investors, connect with fellow entrepreneurs, industry experts, and mentors, and participate in programmatic workshops. Entrepreneurship support organization representatives will receive access to emerging entrepreneurs, gain technical knowledge and training, expand their entrepreneurship support network, and learn additional entrepreneurial ecosystem development strategies.
Applications for both the Delta Challenge and the Entrepreneurship Support Organizations open January 15, 2015. Entrepreneurship Support Organization applications are due by midnight CST on February 15, 2015. ARPA-E Announces $125M Challenge for Disruptive Energy Technologies
The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) announced that it will commit up to $125 million for its 2015 OPEN competition to Support R&D projects on potentially disruptive new energy technologies. Via the 2015 OPEN program, DOE intends to make up to 50 awards across the full spectrum of energy applications. Applications Available for ArtPlace America’s New Community Development Investments Program
ArtPlace America has announced a new program that will provide funding and support to place-based, non-governmental organizations that are interested in sustainably incorporating arts and cultural strategies into the organization’s planning and development work. Selected organizations will receive up to $3 million and gain access to national creative placemaking experts, a financial capital consortium, a federal grants advisory team, and a community documentation and research team. Eligible applicants include organizations from: Alaska or California; a nonmetropolitan area of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas or Minnesota; or a metropolitan area of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, or West Virginia.
